Homophobia in Elder Care

On this episode of The Shape of Care podcast, host Dr. Mindy Fried speaks with several guests about how eldercare programs can better understand, and meet, the needs of older LGBTQ people. Dale Mitchell, founder of the LGBT Aging Project, shares the personal experiences and activism that led to his work on elder housing. Rebekah Levit, the Executive Director of Rogerson House, recounts how she brought in training via the LBGT Aging Project to sensitize her staff to issues facing LGBT elders. Laura Barr reflects on her concerns about the treatment that her wife Jean may face as a lesbian living in a long-term care institution.

The primary concern of aging LGBT folks is where we are going to live that will be safe and welcoming, and where we don’t have to go back into the closet.
