Growing Older: Get Involved
Find groups and organizations that are fighting back against ageism and working to support dignity and equality for old and aging people.Â
The Gray Panthers are a series of multi-generational local advocacy networks in the United States which confront ageism and many other social justice issues. Their advocacy and outreach ranges from sharing presentations on YouTube to participating in deliberations with the United Nations. There are many ways to volunteer, such as lending expertise, attending protests, and serving on subcommittees.
Long Term Care Community Coalition (LTCCC)
The Long Term Care Community Coalition (LTCCC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing quality, dignity, and justice in long-term care. They provide opportunities to get in touch with legislators about the importance of protecting people in long-term care. Additionally, people in New York State can apply to become certified Ombudsmen who advocate for people in long-term care. Anyone (other than an employee of a long-term care facility) can become a member of LTCCC and join their brainstorming and planning meetings.
SAGE is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ older people. Opportunities for volunteers include hosting SAGE Tables to build intergenerational connections; becoming Ambassadors who educate their communities on LGBTQIA+ aging; and attending trainings, webinars, and other events to learn more and build advocacy skills.
At Home With Growing Older (AHWGO) is a nonprofit organization that brings professionals and individuals together to envision and improve the experiences of later life, helping people age with dignity. Volunteers are needed to assist with community outreach, administrative work, events, and more.
Raging Grannies InternationalÂ
Raging Grannies are international "gaggles" of women who use creativity and humour in protests as a way to raise issues and educate on social and political issues. They are internationally recognized for their imaginative protests, with ongoing gaggles across the globe.
Changing the Narrative: Ending Ageism Together
Changing the Narrative is one of the first nationwide initiatives to end ageism, founded in 2018. They offer campaign tools, trainings, and guides for people to join the movement.
