Living with Dementia as an LGBTQ+ Person

This article by the Alzheimer’s Society addresses the experiences of LGBTQ+ people living with dementia. Dementia can bring challenges, and it can help to be prepared.

Some symptoms of dementia, such as memory problems, can make it difficult to recall who knows about our sexual orientation or gender identity. As dementia progresses, it may be more difficult to handle day-to-day tasks.

Planning ahead can help us navigate life after a dementia diagnosis. This can include speaking with a partner about making decisions on our behalf. We may want to find medical and service providers that are LGBTQ+ inclusive.

Know that support services are available. We can live well after dementia.

Some of the symptoms of dementia can have particular implications for LGBTQ+ people. For example, memory problems might make it harder for you to remember who you have told about your sexual orientation or gender identity.
