Native peoples
Native peoples is a common term for the indigenous peoples of North America, who are also referred to by their particular national or tribal identity (e.g. Crow, Ohlone, Hopi) or as Native Americans or American Indians. Native peoples are socially and culturally distinct groups (including tribes and nations) of people whose ancestors inhabited a territory prior to settler and colonial domination. Although Native communities are very diverse, with at least 1,000 indigenous languages spoken in the Americas, indigenous peoples share ancestral ties to the lands and natural environments where they live or from which they have been displaced.
