Caring for Heart Health during Menopause

In this article for “Feisty Menopause,” Selene Yeager, a health and fitness writer, discusses heart health in women. She shares concrete ways we can calculate our risk and make a plan to protect our heart health.

The medical system often doesn't recognize heart disease in women as it should, or give women the care we need. Women may experience different signs than men do of a heart attack.

Menopause can also make a difference. While menopause can cause heart palpitations and irregular heartbeat, these can also be a symptom of heart disease. Also our risks may rise during menopause as our hormones change.

Yeager encourages us to tune in to our own bodies and take charge of our own health.

According to data from the CDC, only about half (56%) of women recognize that heart disease is their number one cause of death. Your risk can rise during the menopause transition as sex hormones decline.
