Postmenopausal Heart Health: What to Expect

This article by Anna Jones, for the University of Alabama at Birmingham newspaper, discusses how menopausal changes can increase heart disease risk and how we can minimize those risks. Jones describes how different lifestyle choices can affect our health and provides helpful tips and resources for maintaining heart health after menopause.

Ways we can maintain our heart health include:

  • Giving up smoking
  • Getting regular health checkups
  • Learning about our family history
  • Being conscious of our diet
  • Participating in physical activity regularly

While menopause does not directly cause cardiovascular diseases, certain changes that occur in the body during menopause can impact heart health. Beyond the shift in hormones, blood pressure, “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides — a type of fat that circulates in the blood, can all increase following menopause.
