sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

More than 30 different bacteria, viruses and parasites are known to be transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral sex. Some STIs can also be passed from parent to child during pregnancy, childbirth, and/or breastfeeding/chestfeeding. If untreated, some STIs can cause life-long health problems such as infertility or pelvic pain and may even be fatal. Ignorance and stigma regarding STIs often cause shame in people who have them and can prevent people from seeking or receiving treatment.
