breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is how mammals including humans feed their babies until they are mature enough to eat solid or semisolid food. Also known as nursing, breastfeeding provides nutrition, bonding, and a variety of health effects to both mother and baby when it is undertaken voluntarily and with adequate support. Feeding babies pumped or expressed breastmilk has many of the same benefits. While breastfeeding is best for many mothers and babies, it may be medically or socially contra-indicated.
