Our Bodies, Ourselves Transformed Worldwide: A Collection of Prefaces
Publication Language: English | Portuguese
Publication Date: 2008
This is more than a collection of prefaces...It is a journal, a colorful portrait capturing the transformation of "Our Bodies, Ourselves" as women around the world have assimilated it into their lives, giving their cultural adaptations identities that are unique and at the same time deeply entwined with the spirit and vision of the original book.It is a collage of reflections, in the voices of women who have overcome tremendous barriers to produce health resources in languages and images that are meaningful and essential to women, girls, and men in their community.
Our Bodies, Ourselves Project
The OBOS global partners who translate and adapt "Our Bodies, Ourselves" into different languages often encounter enormous obstacles. In the preface to each edition, the partners share their experiences, explain the great need for accessible and accurate health information in their countries, and examine the challenges they faced. The challenges are many, including censorship, pro-natalist government policies, community backlash, armed conflict, and civil and political unrest.
In 2008, Our Bodies Ourselves translated some of the prefaces into English and compiled them into this booklet.
The booklet has also been translated into Portuguese by the group who created Nossos Corpos por Nós Mesmas, a Brazilian Portuguese adaptation of "Our Bodies, Ourselves".
