November 2023 Newsletter: Focus on Pregnancy & Childbirth
In her opening letter, Executive Director Amy Agigian writes about the current maternal mortality crisis. She notes that racism in health care leaves Black birthing people three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white birthing people. Our Bodies Ourselves Today will continue to advocate for access to quality reproductive care that all birthing people deserve.
The new “Organizing for Change” section points to Our Bodies Ourselves’ advocacy for midwives and the Birth Justice survey being conducted by the nonprofit Elephant Circle.
The issue also features an interview with Toyin Akinbuli, a pregnancy and childbirth content expert; a resource on post-Roe reproductive care; EH’s personal experience of trying to get pregnant while dealing with fatphobia and violence; and Jonese Austin and Diana Narumbejja Abwoye’s report on the Black Women’s Health Imperative anniversary gala in Washington, DC.
