The United States of Abortion Mazes
In recent years, some US states have instituted abortion bans, while others have put protections in place. This interactive resource uses mazes as a visual tool to make abortion access easier to understand, state by state. Most of its mazes include information on abortion laws in that individual state. They explain the barriers to seeking abortion care or protections in place in the state. The mazes for Texas, Florida, Tennessee, California, Ohio, and Michigan spotlight the personal stories of people from those states who sought abortions.
In 1973, Roe v. Wade granted a nationwide right to abortion and helped create a path to access. But, abortion access has rarely been a straight line — it’s full of twists, turns, and roadblocks. And these barriers have only gotten more complicated since the US Supreme Court gave states the power to ban abortion in 2022’s Dobbs ruling.
