[Health & Sexuality Info](/health-info)# maternal health

Maternal health—the health of the pregnant person during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period—is critical to both infant health and to the mother’s eventual experience of parenting after giving birth. Maternal health inequities (disparities) exist all over the world, including in the United States, where Black and Indigenous women have much higher rates of maternal morbidity (sickness) and mortality (death) than other women. We still have far to go until all pregnant people receive the support, care, and resources they need to attain their highest possible level of health.
