A doula is a highly skilled and trained labor support person. Birth doulas provide continuous emotional support, comfort techniques, and encouragement throughout labor and birth. Doulas complement midwifery and medical care, offering a wide range of services, sometimes including home visits after the baby is born. Doulas are also known as a birth companion, nonclinical birth worker, birthing coach, labor coach, or post-birth supporter. Other types of doulas include abortion doulas and death doulas.
