Many women—especially those in poverty and/or in rural areas—have few choices when it comes to how they give birth. Others have many choices: birth care providers (doctors, midwifes, doulas, birthkeepers), birthing location (homebirth, hospital birth, or freestanding birth center), level of medical intervention desired (unmedicated “natural” childbirth, some medication pain relief, epidural anesthesia, continuous fetal monitoring), and even amenities (birthing pool).
