Jillian R. Scheer, PhD, is a licensed counseling psychologist and assistant professor of psychology at the University of Rhode Island, where they direct the Minority Stress & Trauma Lab.

Dr. Scheer's research and clinical work focus on trauma and mental health, with particular attention to how experiences of violence, discrimination, stigma, and other social and structural stressors shape mental health, substance use, chronic pain, and well-being.  
  
Dr. Scheer has particular expertise in posttraumatic stress, sexual and relationship violence, LGBTQ+ mental health, substance use, and the development of culturally responsive, trauma-informed interventions. Dr. Scheer's work centers the experiences of populations that have historically been underserved or excluded from psychological research and healthcare, including LGBTQ+ people and women living with HIV.  
  
As a licensed psychologist and academic researcher, Dr. Scheer is committed to making mental health information accessible, evidence-based, and responsive to the social and cultural contexts in which people live.

Dr. Scheer's work is grounded in the understanding that mental health is shaped not only by individual experiences, but also by relationships, communities, healthcare systems, and broader social conditions.
