Last week I mentioned this [Washington Post story](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/03/AR2007010301666.html) about the dangers of giving birth in Iraq. Yesterday morning I listened quietly as Saleem Amer, a member of NPR's Baghdad staff, described his wife's difficult pregnancy and the first hours of his son's life in the hospital, where the threat of kidnapping by militias loomed large.
